Mild Winter 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
So far here in Kentucky is has been a mild winter. What effects, if any will this have on last falls seed plantings and young seng? I know seng is suppose to have so many days of cold each year in order for it to grow. I know that sang has survived mild winters before, but I wonder what effect it will have on my young crop?

It is cold enough so it will not have any negative impact. Those in Southern NC and in SC might see some negative effect but probably minimal.

Latt is probably correct. The only thing that might concern me is repeated freezing and thawing of the ground. But honestly, here where I live in Ohio the ground has yet to freeze really solid. Maybe the top half inch of soil, but that's been about it.

I think I remember reading somewhere that as long as the roots are stored at some temp in the low forties for something like 60 days it will meet it's requirements for sending up a top in the spring. (I know these numbers aren't quite right, but somewhere in that ballpark)

Wild plants seem to figure it out just fine on there own. I'm sure it shouldn't be too much of a problem for anything other than newly planted seed which may return to another year of dormancy.

I don't think it's been cold enough here for the ground to freeze at all. It would be heart breaking to have to wait another year for the seed to sprout. It was a lot of hard hard work hand planting 4 and half pounds of seed. Oh well, nothing I can do about it. Just have to wait and see what happens.

It has been a very mild winter here in Middle TN too.

We did have a string of nights - 4 in a row - early December where it got down in the 24-27 degree range.

The ground did freeze a bit then.

Other than that the below freezing nights have been few and far between, just getting down in the upper 20's on a few nights here and there and not for long, mostly just one nighters.

Went squirrel hunting this morning with my boy, did not have much luck, a little windy, but we did see a bunch of turkey scratching out back and got some good leg stretching done.

Same here... mild temps. It's supposed to be 70 tomorrow, however last few days have nad a mild frost each night.

I'm not too worried about it... going ahead with "the plan" even so!
