tracy a lot of people especially beginners use a one way screwdriver, that is how i started. But know i use a little minature mattock with a cutting end on one end and a digging tool on the other my papaw made it back years ago. Its on about a three foot handle which also makes for a great walking stick.

tracy when i dig a root i start by moving all the debri away from the plant at least in a one foot circle. Then with my hand i gently remove all the dirt away until i see the curls of the root and then on down until i see the main root. Then when i see which way the root is going i start to dig with my mattoc. Tracy i guess there is no one certain way to dig a plant i guess everyone has there own way just be careful when digging not to damage the root.
