TOPIC: Was hiking when I came across a seng hunter

Was hiking when I came across a seng hunter 7 years 11 months ago #38270

Hey guys,

So I was doing a little hike up in the hills of Southwest VA where I spent this past weekend. This area was public land in the middle of nowhere near a neighborhood. Anyway, I was climbing the switchbacks when I saw a guy up ahead wearing a one-strap backpack with his little dog. I pass him going a different way, but I end up turning around to higher up the hill and pass him again. This time he was bent over sifting through these leaves right off the trail. It looked like he was either retrieving or planting a root by the way his hands looked, but I couldn't tell. What do you think he was doing? I'm just curious. Would it make sense for someone to be planting their old, small, roots this time of year?

Any chance he was mushroom hunting? That would be my guess.

No mushrooms in the area at all. Also, it hadn't rained in a while.

He could have been foraging for wild edibles (other than shrooms).

There are lots of vids on youtube of folks talking about, gathering and eating all kinds of wild edibles.

I like the one below... he not only talks about them and shows them to you, but he eats them while you watch.

I do a little of this myself... I like the taste of sorrel (sharp and lemony) and often eat dandelion leaves and flowers in a salad.
