I'm not sure how well it works on ticks but Vinalla or vinalla extract works good to keep gnats,squitters,and no-see-ums at bay.
TNhunter-- yes I love the 100% deet pen spray bottle at Wal-Mart the only draw back is that it goes really quick. I normally use that around my ankles, on socks,bottom of pants, and tops of my boots just for ticks. Works like a charm.
