TOPIC: White stuff

Anyone know what this white stuff on these stems below the seed pods? Noticed several this week.

I think that is a cluster of adelgids..

I see them on my seed bed plants and they concentrate on the berry stem.

At first look, you might not think it is some type of insect, but if you look real close, perhaps get a magnifying glass if needed... you will see it is a bunch of tiny apid like critters that are white. They make a white woolly like material that covers themselves for protection. You might have have to swipe some of that white woolly material to uncover them.

They are a real problem for some tree species, like hemlock.

I usually just take my fingers and swipe and smash them of my berry stems.

yup. those little rascals are sometime hard to get rid of, depending on how prelevant they are.
