TOPIC: What you got growing ?

5 year old wild sim - what you think ? 7 years 6 months ago #39111

Chief... It was very good. My wife and I ate the rest of that fish this evening and it was good again.

Think I may go fishing again tomorrow morning... sort of torn between wanting to seng hunt and fish.

What I am hearing on prices does not sound good... so I am leaning towards fishing agian.

I did get out this morning and checked on some of my wild sim, picked a few berries, and also picked berries from my seed bed again.

Ended up with 100+ berries this morning from my seed bed.

I also dug up a nice little 3 prong wild sim plant not far from my seed bed to inspect it and see how the root was looking.

This is the first time I have checked any since they were 2 years old.

It looks OK to me (for my place here). I don't expect it to get huge, but hoping for it to look wild and be average size.

For a 5 year old here on my place I am happy with the results.... but I do think it needs at least another 5 years before I would want to harvest and sell it.

It needs to develop more character, more rings, and have a longer neck with more flats to look like I would want it to.

With wild sim you hear 7 years mentioned a lot, but I think 10 is going to be more like it, especially here on my place where growth is slow.

Comments welcome on how you all think it is progressing.

This one produced 6-7 berries this year which I planted already.

Here is a closer pic of the root. Glad to see some branching, forking off developing.

Last pic...

I kept that top and going to dry it and have some ginseng tea from it.

Below is a pic from my breakfast table... and that little glass has 100+ red berries in it.

That is some nice table decoration right there...

TNhunter, I think the root looks pretty good over all. The shape is good but I agree it needs some rings. Hopefully they will come with a little more age

TNhunter, I've always said seng needs to be 10 years old. It will sure make a big difference in the characteristics.

I agree with you guys.. it's not bad but does need more time.

I am thinking more like 10-12 year range it should start looking a lot better.

Hopefully the prices will come back before then :-)

I loaded up the old Ascend D10T Kayak last night... and did a beautiful 3 mile float on a local small river.

Got a nice limit of bass... some smallies some large mouth... The couple of largest ones looked like 2.5 pounders to me.

Caught them all on top water bait - Rebel Pop R - LOTS of fun.

I planted around 150 red berries on Saturday morning.

Most of the berries on my seed bed have ripened at this point. There is probably around 50 left that are still green.
