When do I plant the seed that I stratify this August? If I plant in early spring 2009 will they sprout spring of 2009 or do i wait until fall of 2009 to plant for sprouts in spring of 2010. Thank you for your response. This is the first time I have done this any info would be great . Thanks again.

If you are just putting them in to stratify this august, you keep them in the ground (stratification process) until next august. Be sure they do not totally dry out or your seed is ruined. Keep them moist (not soaked) through the process. Then you can dig them up, clean them up -you can float test at this time if you want- and plant in the ground next fall. They should come up in the spring of 2010. It takes ginseng seed two annual cycles of freezing and warming to germinate. Or you can plant the seeds into the ground this fall but you won't see your results until the spring of 2010. I hope this helps.

The \"float test\" will help separate any seeds that the embryo is dead inside. You put the stratified seed into water and the seeds that float are dead and you can skim them off the top of the water. The seeds that sink are still fertile and should sprout. Personally, I did not use the test this year and just went to planting to save the time.
