TOPIC: Scotts vs Hankins methods

Re:Scotts vs Hankins methods 13 years 5 months ago #7522

So at that point I have the seeds dropped and then since I found some decent seng growing in this area I cut the gypsum & bone meal application by about 1/2 of what I did in the other areas.

Just sprinkled on a light dusting of each.

Then once dusted I went back down the bed - first raking that pile of leaf compost and top soil back onto the bed. Just a quick flick with the rake and you can sort of toss it across the entire bed width.

At that point you have seeds on top of loose dirt, then more nice loose dirt on top.

Here is a pic showing what it looked like as I had part of that done.

After raking that leaf compost and top soil back on the entire bed I go back and rake the leaves on and spread them out evenly.

Then walk up and down the bed several times pressing that all down on top of the seeds.

Here is what that bed looked like once done with all of that.

I think that method may work very well.

It gets the seeds planted and covered with some dirt and still the only thing you cultivate with is a regular leaf rake.

Now here is another bed I started and finished this moring.

This one was up a little side hollow and again I found some seng there this fall.

What it looked like after raked - this time I raked the leaves to the low side, then raked the leaf compost and top soil to the top side.

Close up of seeds scattered on the 2nd bed.

Again only leaf rake used to brush up the dirt.

A light dusting of bone meal / gypsum and then flicked that pile of leaf compost and top soil down over the bed.

Here is what it looked like when I had all of the leaf compost and top soil raked back on and marker flags in place.

And the last step is to rake the leaves back on and then walk up and down the bed to pack all of that down on top of the seeds well.

Finished !

I did plant a couple of other smaller beds and finished up planting 5.2 oz of seed this morning.

That ended up that last pound of seed I bought.

Now I am out of seed again.

Considering buying more and planting more.

With this method I can easily plant a pound in a couple days only working 3-4 hours per day.

Looks like it should work well too.

We'll see next spring.
