I found a HUGE patch of it and was just wondering if it was worth digging. Is $6 usually the going rate or is that low/high? Do you dry it or sell it green? I've never fooled with it but, I've never saw a patch this big either.

The last few years it has been between $5-$8/ lb. dry weight. Not really worth it to me especially considering how much it shrinks up. I know of a couple of hollers that are just full of bloodroot. If it ever gets to say $20 I might and I only mean maybe will I consider digging for that price cause like I Said shrinks up to nothing.

Yeah it's not a big root it would take alot to make 1 lb... it's about the same size root for a 1 porng ginseng root.. i would say it would take about 600 to 1000 roots to make a lb

This time of the year is best to dig it. It will hold some of it's weight better this time of year, but like the other fellas said it is hardly worth digging. I'm always digging and out in the woods so I will dig a little bit like with several other roots (snakeroot, yams , indian turnup etc) throughout the season and over that time it adds up to a little something and it helps to top off a few seal and cohosh sales and then it seems you get a little something for unnoticable effort, but as for just going out and trying to make some cash off of it, it's kinda hard to do. Any of you fellas dig virginia snakeroot? Stuff smells great. I transplant them sometimes , I'm working on getting a good little patch of them I have probably 300 or so in a patch. I never find them in with no more than 10 or 15 growing together they're pretty scattered here.I guess how they grow though.

It usually sells for 50 to 70 a dry lb and a lb is very hard to add up the roots are extremely light and has the smell of vicks vapor rub. I don't know about out your way but here they seem to \"dot\" the woods. You might find one then find another 20 feet away then another 200 ft away with 2 babies, and so on throughout a day in the woods I usually collect around 20 or so roots in one outing. Ginseng is more plentiful than this stuff. I'm not sure what they use it for but an old couple I met once said they use or used it at one time for colds but I would not advise that, from what I have read about it its pretty toxic and the dosage is hard to caculate. But they swore by it to get rid of a cold.
