There are 3 very important factors to consider when growing ginseng:

1. shade - about 70%-80 % is recommended.

2. soil - high in calcium and organic matter, ph should be in the 4-7 range, a soil test should be considered.

3. drainage - poor drainage can lead to root rot, excessive drainage can lead to inferior roots.

In general, the slower the ginseng root grows, the higher the value. Any intervention to speed up the root's growth, whether it be tilling the soil or adding fertilizers will affect the price and value of the ginseng root.

There are 3 basic ways to grow ginseng:

1. Under artificial shade in open fields of well-tilled soil. Harvest can start after 3-4 years. Ginseng roots will be large but low-grade in value.

2. In the woods with very little intervention to grow ginseng like it grows in nature, thereby simulating wild growing conditions. Harvest can start after 7-11 years. Ginseng roots will be smaller but almost indistinguishable from wild ginseng.

3. A combination of 1 and 2 in tilled soil under natural shade provided by the forest trees. Harvest can start after 6-8 years. Ginseng roots will be mid-grade in value.

When choosing a planting method, there are many factors and circumstances to consider. Ginseng does require a period of dormancy during the winter so that it may sprout in the spring so your climate is also important. In the end, you have to decide which method will suit your needs and goals.
