TOPIC: some old roots from this year

some old roots from this year 13 years 7 months ago #6307

Billy inspired me to post these after seeing those beautiful old men he dug. The one top right is a double top that has a double top for 12 years and at least 20 scars before it was a double, really one of my favorite of the year. All of these are at least 20-30 years old

when they dry it gets really hard to count the scars couple of those might be a little under 20 years 17-19, I recounted the rings on all of them and three of them I came up with less than 20 but a few more on 2 of the others, fair trade, I will count the scars and label them next year before they dry. Thanks for the feedback, I will post a pic of my secret digging tool that sure really keeps from breaking roots

billygoat I called you back but never got through and left you a message.

My secret digging tool for those roots is the same one I use for all of my other digging B)

I will holler at you in the am,been really busy. Wifes 8 months pregnant, When I get down on one of those big ones I carry a 8-10 inch deer antler tine, keeps me from scraping and breaking those hogs, really has worked great over the years

Hey Billygoat,

Nice roots - those long necks are special for sure.

I found several in the 20-25 year old range this year and one in the 35 year old range.

Here is a pic of it - it had a extra long neck. If you count back that root got it's start around 1975. To me it is kind of bitter sweet digging one like that.

I also found one with double 3 prong tops not long ago and planted the root in my seed producing bed.
